Running Rebels & 5th Annual Fresh Coast Classic together again!

Running Rebels and the city of Milwaukee, for its 5th straight year brought together over 2,000 youth, adults and families for a Thanksgiving weekend filled with continuing education opportunities, (4)HBCU teams (Lincoln University, Bowie State, Cheyney University & Fisk University) in a two day basketball tournament.  Also some of Wisconsins top MPS & Surburban high schools teams facing off for a WIN!!!

The 2011 Fresh Coast Classic brought together many starting with the college/resource fair held at the Harley Davidson Museum on November 23rd.  With over 50 colleges/universities, the fair supplied many with the rich history of historically black colleges/univerties, financial information for all that have a desire for continuing education and the connection to many branches of armed services.

Wisconsin Lutheran College played host to thousands of fans as they cheered on their favorite college and high school teams. Congratulations to Lincoln University in their win over Bowie State 74-72.  Denzel Mooney #22 also took home the FCBC MVP honors.  We will see Lincoln University at the 2012 classic to defend their title.

Rebel Staff and Youth participate in UNCF Walk/Run.

John Rakowski, along with youth Brian Burgess and Darrick McWay, Jr., ran in the UNCF Run/Walk this past Saturday, July 16, 2011.

The event was a great success for all three runners.  Brian Burgess ended up with a time of 24 minutes and Darrick (Woody) McWay, Jr finished with the official time of 26:30 and an 8:32 mile pace.  John Rakowski placed 2nd in his age division and 10th overall with the time of 20:45.

It was a great experience for all and both Burgess and McWay will be continuing to run with Rakowski in future runs to bring up their times and continue in the great experiences.

Jacqueline Spence & P.O.W.E.R. Reading Program

When 2007-2008 District Report Card displaying that Milwaukee WKCE-CRT Proficiency Reading Scores for the 2007-20008 school year were at 38%, Jacqueline Spence (M.P.S. Educator and former Running Rebels Community Organization Education Specialist) knew something had to be done.

Spence worked hard to create and implement the P.O.W.E.R. (Producing Optimal Wisdom Enhanced by Reading) Reading Program to encourage high school students to develop their reading skills, increase their reading assessment scores, enhance their 21st century communication skills by creating a personal Writer’s Notebook, as they simulate conversations depicted around real-life issues with their Violence-Free Zone Youth Advisors, while enhancing a love for reading.

Spence’s work has not gone unnoticed.  Jacqueline Spence is M.P.S. Central Office’s Teacher of the Year! Congratulations Jackie and thank you for all your hard work!
